If I recall correctly, Gateway ROLE_* events are already being handled and they update the internal role cache.

So I only need to change the discord-markdown injection at the top of message-to-event.js and add tests.

If I just make it be text formatting, the role will not be pingable by Matrix users. That's probably a separate issue that I'd solve later.
