Why do Italian/U.S. newspapers online have so many intrusive ads? #107

I’ve noticed that many Italian and U.S. online newspapers have become almost impossible to read because of the number of intrusive ads. Pop-ups, auto-playing videos, banners covering the text, and constant requests to accept cookies make the reading experience frustrating.

I understand that newspapers need advertising revenue, especially with fewer people paying for subscriptions, but sometimes the ads completely ruin the user experience.

Is this a problem only in Italy and the U.S., or are online newspapers in other countries becoming the same? Why do Italian/U.S. newspapers online have so many intrusive ads?

Italian and U.S. newspapers online can be a bit exhausting sometimes. You open an article hoping to read the latest news, and suddenly you’re surrounded by pop-ups, banners, autoplay videos, and ads covering half the screen. Some pages feel more like an advertising maze than a newspaper. I get that ads help keep online journalism running, but there has to be a better balance. I just want to read the story without constantly hunting for the tiny “X” button. 😅That’s why I got interested in ad blockers. For example, I found out that in 2026 there is AdLock, which directly competes with AdGuard
